So, I had a bunch of shit written for this review and decided to scrap it all. I ended up writing more about Eyehategod than anything and realized how shitty it was to write line after line of a review for one band, based off of another band. Eyehategod rules, there's no doubt about that, and there's definite, undeniable similarities here but fuck that, Iron Witch are their own entity and they're one to be reckoned with.
Iron Witch hail from the UK and give us a pile of songs to lament to. These are grievous tracks of phlegm spewing hate and disgust with a backdrop (that's anything but in the background) of crushing weight and catchy rhythms. Walls of feedback screech through, giving us that warm fuzzy feeling we all got when we first were overwhelmed by the high-pitched squalor. This is dirty, honest, painful, and reeks of the miserable.
I can just imagine the mass of foot tapping slow-mosh going on at one of their shows. Heads slowly nodding front-to-back with every note, hanging in perpetual melancholy. Chris' vocal chords being obliterated as the rest of the guys decimate the Earth under the weight of their sound. Iron Witch are some serious sludge titans and I can't wait to hear more from them.
My only complaint is that I didn't hear about these guys sooner and missed out on the physical release. Hopefully that won't be an issue much longer and someone will 'do it proper' via vinyl and/or tape. The Witch is alive, the Witch is fetid, the Witch is Iron.
Witch Hunter Records (released by these guys, but sold out sadly)
